Pups with acne

by Twila on February 17, 2016

Acne, a problem that not only teenagers face but also cats and dogs!

Wait, how do dogs get pimples?

Acne occurs when their hair follicles become irritated and just like humans it last for a short time. If you have a long hair pet, you have nothing to worry about. It’s the short haired dogs like Boxers and Bulldogs that experience break outs.

Age range of breakouts

Between the ages of 5-8months. Once your pet reaches about a year old they shouldn’t have acne anymore.

Symptoms

  • Blackheads
  • Itch
  • Pain
  • Red bumps
  • Pus
  • Swelling
  • Scars
  • Infections
  • Lesions
  • Scars from lesions
  • Pet may constantly rub face against furniture and/or rug

Causes

  • Genetics
  • Trauma
  • Hormones

What to expect at the vet?

There are other diseases that are similar to acne so your vet will rule those out first. Then your vet will prescribe a acne medication and/or shampoo to use.
